What is Cold Forming?
Cold forming uses hydraulic and mechanical pressure to shape a metal blank. As opposed to hot forming, where metal is heated beyond the point of crystallization, cold forming is performed at room temperature or, for certain materials, slightly above. A variety of processes using a horizontal or vertical press allow for the creation of complex designs with a high level of dimensional tolerance.
Why Is Cold Forming an Economical Choice?
Cold forming costs can be anywhere between 40-60 percent less than machining. Cold forming is also more cost-effective than hot forming. This is because:
- Less material is wasted. The cold forming process can produce up to 100 percent yield rates. This means nearly all raw material is used — an important metric, particularly when working with valuable precious metals such as silver and gold.
- Less additional processing is required. In a single operation, cold forming can produce highly complex parts that are smooth and free of burrs. This means cold forged parts require fewer secondary operations to prepare for sale.
- Errors are less common. Cold forming is more accurate than hot forming because there is no possibility of a component deforming during cooldown. - Tooling is less expensive. Costs associated with cold forming mold development are generally reasonable. Each project is different, though simple toolsets can often be developed or modified for only a few hundred dollars. Even more complex, multi-cavity molds are relatively inexpensive.
